Robyn found a space near the terraced houses in Rangemore, one of which Rebecca now rented, and squeezed her VW Golf into a tight space behind Rebecca’s car. As soon as she shut her car door, a dog began barking – angry, high-pitched yapping Robyn associated with small lap dogs. She ignored it, marched towards number fifteen and rapped on the door. Rebecca opened immediately and beckoned her inside.

It was a small, clinical space that lacked homeliness. Rebecca had unpacked a few belongings but it was nowhere near as friendly and welcoming as Jordan’s house had been.

‘Hi. How are you?’ said Robyn.

Rebecca had been crying. Her eyes were puffy again but she managed a brave smile. ‘Oh, you know. Been a difficult day.’

‘I can imagine.’

Rebecca gave her a warm smile. ‘I’ve just opened a bottle of wine. Want to join me?’

‘Just a small one. Can’t afford to get pulled over for drink-driving.’ She looked up as Dylan wandered in.

‘Hey.’

The boy looked disorientated. ‘Hi. Mum, I can’t find Yoda.’

‘He’s in the box, sweetie. We packed him together.’

‘I can’t see him,’ he whined. ‘I want him.’ His began to sniff.

Rebecca sighed. ‘He’s been like this all day.’

‘I’ll sort it,’ said Robyn.

‘Would you? I’ll pour you a drink.’

‘Come on, Dylan, I’ll help you find him,’ said Robyn.

Dylan looked up at her. His face was pale, and violet bags hung below his eyes. He nodded and she followed him into the sitting room, as sparse as the kitchen, furnished only with a settee, a chair and a television. A box of toys had been opened, and action figures and toys were strewn on the floor. Robyn’s eyes lighted upon the Yoda figurine immediately, lying on the floor in front of the box.

‘Look, there he is.’ She passed it to Dylan, who blinked several times before taking it from her, his hand shaking as he did so.

‘You feeling okay?’ she asked.

He shook his head. ‘Foggy,’ he replied.

Rebecca came in carrying two half-filled glasses of wine. ‘You found it,’ she said, indicating the small toy.

‘Dylan says he feels foggy,’ said Robyn.

Rebecca’s face became more serious. ‘That’s because you’re tired, Dylan. It’s been a long day. You need to go to bed. How about you get ready now Robyn is here? Then come down and say goodnight.’

‘I’m not tired,’ he said, dropping to the floor. ‘I don’t want to go to bed.’

Rebecca shrugged. ‘I’m not going to make you go, but if you’re too tired tomorrow, you won’t be able to play football in the park like we planned.’

The boy stared at her for a minute then rose and left the room.

Rebecca watched him go. ‘He’s been acting up today.’

‘It’s the shock of it all. It’s only to be expected. You’ve both had a terrible shock.’ Robyn sipped her wine before speaking again. ‘I know you’ve got a load on your mind but I wondered if Jordan knew somebody called Lucy Harding. She’s a doctor at the Abbots Bromley surgery.’

Rebecca stared at her hard.

‘Rebecca?’

‘Sorry, I was a bit taken aback.
